Belonging to Each Other Accepting Applications for 11th Season of Transitional Housing for Falmouth People Experiencing Homelessness.
Belonging to Each Other, Inc. (BTEO), a community nonprofit seeking to end homelessness in Falmouth, is accepting applications for the 11th season of its transformative residential program. From November 1 through late April, BTEO provides housing to Falmouth-connected adult guests in a homey, shared-room environment. This housing provides respite so residents can work toward stable housing, work-readiness, and connection to supports needed to stay in their new home. More than 125 area volunteers assist the program in many ways, including preparing and supplying the houses, connection to food, and transportation to work and appointments. Last year, BTEO’s residential program housed 31 people, ages 18-86.
BTEO case managers work collaboratively with local organizations providing homeless outreach and rehousing. Applicants will be screened, and applicants may be directed to other programs if BTEO can’t house them. Many of BTEO’s residents are similarly referred to BTEO by other agencies, but eligible people can apply directly.
Examples of eligible applicants include Falmouth residents who lost or are losing their housing, people with significant medical, family or employment connections to Falmouth, and people fleeing domestic violence. BTEO serves people who currently lack resources or support networks to obtain permanent housing.
While living in BTEO housing, residents practice abstinence from alcohol, cannabis and drugs not prescribed to them. Although many in BTEO housing do not have a current substance use disorder, many others are working on their recovery. “Many of our neighbors are struggling with substance use disorder. Substance abstinence by all during their stay with us benefits those who need a sober environment and helps everyone to focus on their work to get back on their feet,” explains BTEO executive director Gina Torielli. This work includes creating and following a tailored plan to obtain stable housing, necessary services and, if appropriate, employment. “We meet people where they are at, and provide advice and, if we are able, services to help them achieve their goals,” said Carol Greeley, BTEO’s program and clinical director.
